INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Kevin Coates set a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and school record in the men's 1650 freestyle (15:43.39) during the first day of the GLIAC Championships at the University of Indianapolis. His championship time was an NCAA A cut and topped the old GLIAC record by more than three seconds.

Coates and teammates sophomore Jared Zimmer and senior Adam Brown dominated the 1650 freestyle. Zimmer finished in second with an NCAA B time of 16:00.84. Brown touched the wall at 16:09.98, good for fourth place and another NCAA B time. Freshman Trent Mason scored points with a thirteenth place performance of 17:07.46.

The trios' impressive showing helped the Lewis men hold down second place (82 points) after day one of the Championships. The women (24 points) are in seventh.

The men's squad of sophomore Adam Olszeski, freshman Luke Pavlakovich, freshman Allan Sliva and freshman Evan Childers came in sixth in the 200 yard medley (1:37.30 in the finals and 1:38.20 in the preliminaries). The women's team of freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik, senior Stephanie White-Olson, freshman Allie Henges and sophomore Nicole Marano earned a seventh place performance (1:51.40 in the finals and 1:52.09 in the preliminaries) in the same race.

In the women's 1650 freestyle junior Andrea Freisleben came in seventeenth (19:11.09) and freshman Genny Aamoth came in right behind her in eighteenth (19:15.31). Freisleben slashed 48 seconds off her previous best time and Aamoth cut 32 seconds.
