INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik won the women's 500 yard freestyle championship during day two of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the University of Indianapolis. Her time of 5:00.93 is an NCAA A cut by more than two seconds and breaks the school record she set in November by seven seconds. Mikolajcik's victory comes a day after freshman Kevin Coates set a GLIAC Championships and school record in his 1650 freestyle triumph. Lewis took four of the top nine spots in the men's 500 yard freestyle, all with NCAA B times. Senior Adam Brown came in fourth with a 4:39.96 performance. Sophomore Jared Zimmer was right behind, touching the wall at 4:42.54. Sophomore Jason Ament was only six hundredths of a second behind Zimmer, earning a seventh place finish of 4:42.60. Coates took ninth and the consolation championship, clocking in at 4:41.09 in the finals. Senior Stephanie White-Olson earned seventh place in the women's 200 yard individual medley (2:13.40). Sophomore Bridget Bettenhausen won the consolation championship (2:13.85). In the men's race sophomore Adam Olszeski (1:57.39) took tenth and sophomore Aidan Murphy grabbed fourteenth (1:59.49). Mikolajcik, White-Olson, freshman Allie Henges and freshmen Carrie Borgstede had a strong second place showing in the women's 400 yard medley relay, finishing at 4:01.02. The men's squad of Olszeski, freshman Arty Czarobski, Brown and freshman Evan Childers finished in fifth with a time of 3:32.84 in the finals. In the 200 yard freestyle relay the men and women both took sixth place. The women's squad of freshman Stephanie Halcomb, sophomore Nicole Marano, Henges and Borgstede finished the relay in 1:41.94. The men's team of Murphy, junior Greg Marx, Childers and freshman Allan Sliva recorded a time of 1:27.96. The women's strong showing in day two have moved them from seventh to fifth place (126 points). The men hold the third spot (196 points). The Flyers are back in the pool Friday for the third day of the GLIAC Championships. |
