COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Adam Brown became the most decorated Flyer in Lewis men's swimming history when he won his eighth career All-American honor in an eighth place finish (15:48.12) in the 1650 freestyle on the final day of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships. Brown's time earned him All-American status and three other Flyers produced All-American Honorable Mention on Saturday to bring the total to 11 All-American performances during the 2008 Championships. At the Championships Lewis swimmers scored in 11 of the 14 events they competed during the competition, earning two All-America and nine Honorable Mention All-America awards. Brown's other honors came in a ninth place showing in the 1000 freestyle, a tenth place performance in the 200 butterfly and a sixteenth place finish in the 500 freestyle. He also broke his own school record in the preliminaries of the 500 yard freestyle. Brown passed Michael Lapustin who graduated last year and earned seven career All-American honors. Also on Saturday freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik set a new school record of 2:04.65 in a ninth place finish in the 200 yard backstroke to win the consolation championship. She was within .47 of taking sixth place. This was her third All-American honor of the meet. She finished in 14th in the women's 200 freestyle, setting a new school record in the preliminaries, and came in sixth in the 500 yard freestyle. Brown was not alone in his impressive performance in the 1650 freestyle. Freshman Kevin Coates took eleventh (15:52.74) and sophomore Jared Zimmer came in thirteenth to earn their second All-American Honorable Mention accolades of the meet. Both Coates and Zimmer earned their previous honors in the 1000 freestyle. Zimmer's also earned two All-American honors last season to bring his career total to four. As a team, the men earned 21st place, tied with Grand Valley State University and tied for third among Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference schools. It is the fourth straight top 25 finish for the men's team. The women earned 28th place, improving from 30th in 2007. The Lewis women were fourth among GLIAC conference schools. |
