BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Behind NCAA provisional performances by senior Terran Wertz and sophomore Scott Barnas, the Lewis University men's and women's track and field teams each placed second at Illinois Wesleyan's Titan Open, held Saturday at the Shirk Center.

The Flyers originally were scheduled to compete at the two-day Indiana Relays, but inclement weather prevented the teams from traveling to the meet. The Flyers were a last-minute addition to the Titan Open.

The women secured 76 points, while the men scored 65 points. Illinois Wesleyan was the top finisher for both the men (70 points) and women (104 points). The women's competition featured 11 teams, while 13 teams participated on the men's side.

Wertz was one of two event winners for the Lewis women and one of 10 members of the women's team to earn team points in the meet with a top-six finish. She won the mile with a time of 5:04.37, securing her second NCAA provisional of the indoor season. Wertz earlier this season secured an NCAA provisional qualification in the 800 meters.

Sophomore Christine Kustra was the other individual event winner for the Lewis women. She placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5 ¼. Kustra also scored with a third in the long jump (16-5) and a fourth in the 200 meters (26.75).

Other scorers for the women's team were junior Rachel Quintana, second in the weight throw (45-5 ¼); sophomore Ashley Butler, second in the long jump (16-6 ½) and fifth in the 55 meters (7.51); sophomore Michelle Ruff, third in the 200 meters (26.43); freshman Maggie Boban, third in the 400 meters (1:01.90); freshman Samantha Linck, fourth in the high jump (5-3 ¼); senior Sarah King, fifth in the 200 meters (26.81) and sixth in the pole vault (9-9); freshman Danielle Thompson, fifth in the mile (5:33.83); and junior Amanda Lewis, sixth in the 400 meters (1:02.71).

For the men, Barnas' provisional mark occurred with a win in the shot put. He threw for 53-10 1/4, topping his previous provisional mark of 52-4, set last week. Barnas also scored in the weight throw, finishing fourth with a toss of 47-9 ¼.

Barnas was one of three Flyers to win a men's event and one of seven to register team points with a top-six finish.

Freshman Andy Lepkowski won the mile (4:16.64) and senior Adrian Myers took first in the 800 meters (1:57.27). Myers also scored by finishing second to Lepkowski in the mile (4:16.91).

Other scorers for the men's team were senior Andrew Northrup, second in the 5000 meters (15:34.97); freshman Matt Schultz, second in the pole vault (14-0); freshman Adam Zaremba, fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.42); and senior Emory Burdette, sixth in the 800 meters (1:59.74).

The Flyers compete again on Saturday when they host the Dick Pond Invitational at the Lewis Fieldhouse.
