Dec. 20, 2007
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - All four of the Lewis University men's soccer players who made the 2007 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team have been selected to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region team. Junior forward Cory Mastey and sophomore midfielder Nestor Hernandez were named to the first team. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel and freshman midfielder Mardoche Beya earned recognition on the second team. First-team selections earn a spot on the ballot for All-America recognition. Mastey led Lewis in scoring for a second consecutive season in 2007. He finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference in goals (13) and tied for sixth in points (29). Mastey posted six multi-goal games during the season, and the Flyers went 8-0 when he tallied at least one goal. Mastey was named GLVC Player of the Week on Aug 26 after scoring four goals and one assist in the Flyers' first two games of the season. The all-region first team selection is the second of his career. Hernandez, in a breakout season, emerged as clutch offensive performer for the Flyers in 2007. He led the Flyers and tied for fifth in the conference in game-winning goals (5) and was second on the team in total goals (9) and assists (5). Hernandez scored six of his nine goals during Lewis' 10-game win streak, igniting the lengthy run with an unassisted tally in the Flyers' 1-0 overtime win over then-ranked No. 21 Indianapolis on Sept. 30. Hernandez was named GLVC Player of the Week on Oct. 15 after scoring the game-winning marker in Lewis' 2-1 win over Drury and the game-tying goal in the Flyers' 3-2 comeback win over then-ranked No. 21 Rockhurst. This the first all-region award of his career. Szymel put together the best season of his Lewis career in 2007, setting personal bests in goals-against average (0.86), saves (68), wins (17), save percentage (.791) and minutes (1884:55). He had six solo and three combined shutouts for the season, including two consecutive shutouts during the Flyers' conference title run. Szymel ended the regular season ranked fourth in the conference in GAA among goalies with 1,000 or more minutes played. In the postseason, Szymel elevated his play to an even higher level, posting a 0.75 GAA with 14 saves and only three goals allowed. His seven saves in the Lewis' GLVC tournament semifinal win over Indianapolis was a season high and his shutout of No.1 NKU in the conference championship game was the first time the Norse were shutout since Oct. 27, 2006. This is the second NSCAA all-region award for Szymel's career. Beya made an immediate impact for the Flyers in 2007, starting in 18 games. He tied for fourth on the team in assists (3) and was tied for fifth in goals (5), scoring the first game-winning goal of his career in the Flyers' thrilling come-from-behind win over Rockhurst on Oct. 14. Beya finished the regular season with 13 points and a .464 shot-on-goal percentage. The Flyers (17-5) enjoyed great success in 2007, posting their 16th consecutive season of 10 or more wins and finishing tied with the 2000 team for the second most wins in program history. Lewis claimed its eighth Great Lakes Valley Conference title with a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 1 Northern Kentucky and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in program history.
