Tom Mendoza is in his first season as an assistant coach at Lewis University. Mendoza came to Lewis as a senior last year after transferring from Newman University, where he played for three seasons. With Lewis last season, Mendoza tallied 620 assists as a setter for the Flyers. In his career at Newman, Mendoza helped his club to two NAIA national tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2004. Mendoza passed out more than 1,200 assists each of his three seasons at Newman and ranked third in the nation among NAIA setters by averaging 12.08 assists per game in 2004. He also was named an All-American that season. Following his senior season at Lewis, Mendoza coached a 15 Mizuno team at Sports Performance, guiding the squad to a fifth-place finish at the Junior Nationals. While serving as an assistant coach at Lewis, Mendoza will finish his degree in management information systems. Mendoza resides in Buffalo Grove, Ill. |
