EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Senior Andrew Northrup led a field of six Lewis runners by finishing 23rd at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships Saturday morning on the campus of Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Flyers placed 12th among the 22-team field. Northrup ran the 10K course in 32:33.94, but he missed qualifying for the national championships as an individual by nearly 34 seconds. The top four teams and the top two individual finishers not on those teams earn an automatic trip to the championships. Northrup finished 10th fastest among runners eligible for an individual spot. Other runners for Lewis were freshman Andy Lepkowski in 35th (32:56.99), senior Adrian Meyers in 65th (33:33.42), junior Patrick Walsh in 77th (33:59.87), junior Jeff Ritzema in 91st (34:33.85) and senior Alberto Villa in 131st (35:57.38) among 154 runners. Nate Peck, of Grand Valley State, won the championship for a fourth consecutive year with an impressive 31 second victory. Grand Valley State easily won the team title with 20 points, placing six runners among the top 10 individuals. Wayne State was the runner-up with 90 points followed by Southern Indiana with 134 points and Northern Kentucky with 147 points. Lewis totaled 288 points. Saginaw Valley State's Nick Krus and Tiffin's Chad Roberts garnered the individual slots at the national championships after placing ninth and 10th, respectively. |
