Wayne State tops Grand Valley In Extra Innings

May 10, 2007

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Meredith Boxberger's two-out double in the 10th inning lifted 20th-ranked Wayne State to a 3-2 victory over Grand Valley State Thursday in a Division II Great Lakes Regional first-round game.

Sarah Kish delivered a one-out single to ignite the 10th-inning rally and was forced at second by Sarah Berry. Pinch-runner Laura Guzman scooted to second on a passed ball ahead of Boxberger's game-winning hit.

Wayne State (40-15), the No. 5 seed, sent the game into extra innings in the seventh. Stephanie LeClair led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Lindsey Perry.

No. 4 seed Grand Valley State (32-17) led 2-0 following solo home runs by Kristin Moleski in the first inning and Elizabeth Smith in the fourth. Wayne State cut the GVSU lead in half on a solo homer by Berry leading off the sixth.

Winning pitcher Molly Yetman (23-3) struck out 15 and allowed seven hits and a walk. Lori Andjelich (16-7), who yielded 10 hits and no walks while fanning seven, absorbed the loss.

Boxberger, Perry and Kish all were 2-for-5 for Wayne State. Becky Rudenga and Karen Walters each went 2-for-4 for Grand Valley State.
