GREENWOOD, Ind. - Senior Allison Schmitz turned in Lewis' best individual performance since the 2004 season at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships, winning four matches and advancing to the semifinals before bowing out one win short of the championship match Sunday afternoon. Schmitz, seeded 14th among the 64 competitors, beat Wayne State's Jennifer Bradford (6-2, 6-3), Southern Indiana's Reilly Ackerman (6-0, 6-1) and Drury's Thu Ha Mai (6-0, 6-3) in the first three rounds before upsetting third-seeded Lindsey Fisher of Indianapolis 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Schmitz fell to eventual tournament champion Darina Berkova of Northwood 6-0, 6-3 to finish the tournament in a tie for third. Schmitz's run was the best by Flyer at the ITA Regional since Yuliya Kuznets won the singles title for Lewis in 2004. Senior Erin Piechocinski and freshman Clare Kessler also competed in singles for Lewis. Piechocinski fell to 11th-seeded Laura Phillipp of Indianapolis 6-2, 6-1, and Kessler went down to seventh-seeded Khrystsina Tryboi of Drury 6-3, 6-4. In doubles action, Schmitz and Piechocinski lost to the fifth-seeded tandem of Amy Palmgren and Nicole Kirch of Michigan Tech 9-8 (6). The event featured 14 schools from the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region. Next up for Lewis is the Upper Iowa Invitational on Sept. 29-30. |
