Schmitz Claims No. 1 Singles Crown At Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - Lewis University senior Allison Schmitz earned the No. 1 singles title and, along with senior Melanie Sandberg, took the No. 1 doubles title to lead Lewis at the Upper Iowa Challenge Saturday and Sunday at Byrnes Park.

Schmitz won two matches to advance in the No. 1 bracket. She defeated third-seed Emily Gaster of Augustana College 6-3, 6-0 and Molly Eslick of Wartburg College 6-2, 6-3 to claim the title.

In the No. 1 doubles bracket, the Schmitz and Sandberg strung together three wins to claim the victory. They beat the duo of Eslick and Emily Heying 8-5 before downing Kate Maland and Sarah Westman of MSU-Mankato by the same score. Schmitz and Sandberg outlasted Gaster and Brittany Gaster 9-8 (7-4) for the title.

Sandberg also competed in the No. 3 singles bracket. She earned wins over Mallery Cox of Upper Iowa (6-1, 3-6 (12-10)) and Jill Hagestuen of Augustana (6-3, 6-3) before settling for second place after falling to Marcelle Strydom of Nebraska-Kearney 4-6, 6-1 (10-7).

In the No. 6 singles bracket, freshman Ann Oberbrunner defeated Cassandra Anderson of MSU-Mankato 7-5, 6-3 and Sarah Lamberty of Augustana 7-5, 6-0 before falling to Claire Bryan 4-6, 6-1 (10-5) in the bracket's championship match.

In the No. 2 singles bracket, senior Erin Piechochinski fell to Brittany Gaster 4-6, 1-6 to get knocked out the winner's bracket, but she rebounded with wins over Westman (6-4, 6-1) and, in a rematch against Gaster (6-3, 7-5) to take third place in the bracket.

Another third-place finish came from junior Michelle Wright in the No. 7-9 singles bracket. Wright took down Nicole Henry of Upper Iowa 1-6, 6-4 (10-8) before dropping to the consolation bracket with a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Amber Baustian of Augustana. A 4-6, 6-2 (10-8) win over Kim Johnson of Augustana sealed the third-place finish for Wright.

Freshman Clare Kessler was fourth in the No. 5 singles bracket. After losing to Danielle Gilbert of Augustana 7-6, 6-2, Kessler earned a consolation bracket victory over Kristin Beebe of MSU-Mankato (4-6, 7-5 (10-8)) before falling to Jenna Eichman of Nebraska-Kearney 6-1, 6-1 in a battle for third.

Junior Jordan Lynde was sixth in the No. 4 singles bracket. She slipped to Emily Johnson of Augustana 2-6, 3-6, Kelsey Montgomery of Upper Iowa 3-6, 1-6 and McKenna Irwin of Nebraska-Kearney 2-6, 1-6.

In other doubles action, Piechochinski and Lynde took third in the No. 2 bracket, and Kessler and Oberbrunner tied for third in No. 3 bracket.

The Flyers conclude their fall season at the Hinds-Kellogg Classic (Macomb, Ill.) on Oct. 5-6.
